The Albany Jazz Festival has been moved from Riverfront Park to the Palace Theatre for tomorrow, Saturday, September 6, 2008 due to the threat of poor weather conditions.
Fireworks for Jazz Festival have been cancelled!
Please join the city of Albany and Mayor Jerry Jennings celebrate Jazz Fest’s 7th year of highly acclaimed musical performances!
The event starts at noon and continues to 8pm. Admission to Jazz Fest is free!

Keith Pray’s Big Soul Ensemble plays from 12:30pm – 1:15pm.
The Brubeck Brothers Quartet plays from 1:45pm– 2:45pm. Ernestine Anderson plays from 3:15pm – 4:15pm. Doc Gibbs & Picante plays from 4:45pm – 5:45pm. The David Sanborn Group plays from 6:15pm – 7:30pm.
The Albany Jazz Fest artists include:
The David Sanborn Group: one of the top saxophone players of all time. He helped to define modern saxophone sound and is winner of multiple Grammy awards.
Doc Gibbs & Picante: A top music industry percussionist with an assortment of funk rhythms and unusual instruments.
Ernestine Anderson: With a five decade career, over 30 albums, and being a four time nominee for the Grammy awards, this swing and blues artist is a legend of jazz.
The Brubeck Brothers Quartet: Integrating funk, blues, and world music into their jazz, these improvising musicians capture the pure essence of jazz. Dan and Chris Brubeck come from one the most accomplished musical families in America.
Keith Pray’s Big Soul Ensemble: Big band, big soul, awesome jazz music. More than twelve of the NY Capital Region’s finest jazz musicians make up this local hit. See them play every first Tuesday of the month at The Lark Tavern.

This past weekend was the 61st annual Albany Tulip Festival. There was great food, live music, and of course lots of blooming tulips!
We wanted to say congratulations to, Juliana Hernandez, of Loudonville NY, who was crowned the 2009 Albany Tulip Queen!

This past Saturday, January 9th, 2010 we got to swing by the Albany All Stars season opener at the Washington Avenue Armory for a night of brutal body checks! If you didn’t know about the Albany roller derby team, you do now! The 2010 season includes 9 action-packed bouts of intra-league and inter-league play. It’s no surprise that it was a full house! Honestly, there is not much fun $10 can get you these days, but a night of roller-derby is totally worth it! Check out the Albany Allstar website for more information.

This series of free, outdoor concerts is celebrating its 19 th year. Thursday evenings from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. downtown Albany heats up with lively music – a different theme each week! Food and beverage vendors complete the scene for a great way to start your weekend.
All concerts will be held at Albany Riverfront Park* .

Dennis DeYoung is a founding member of the rock band STYX. DeYoung has written eight of the bands nine top ten singles including “Come Sail Away”, “Mr. Roboto” and the 1979 Peoples Choice Award Winner, “Babe”. STYX has sold over 35 million albums worldwide and was the only band to ever record four consecutive triple platinum albums.

With over three dozen Billboard chart hits in the 1960's, they defined instrumental guitar rock. These hits book ended the decade, from 1960's “Walk Don't Run” to 1969's “Hawaii Five-O”. Additional accomplishments include 2008 induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, contributions to movie and commercial soundtracks including Pulp Fiction , record sales approaching 100 million and not to forget, the founders of Surf Rock. The group still remains among the top 5 instrumental artists on the singles chart.
At the age of fifteen, Peter achieved international fame as “Herman”, lead singer of the legendary pop band Herman's Hermits. His classics include “I'm Into Something Good”, “Mrs. Brown you've Got a Lovely Daughter”, “I'm Henry VIII, I Am” and many more! Herman's Hermits sold fifty-two million recordings including fourteen singles and seven albums that went gold. Peter's theatrical background on Broadway and multiple hit television series has contributed to his compelling stage presence and sold out venues.

Singer/Songwriter Night with Joan Osborne. Thursday, June 26th, 5 p.m. - 8 p.m.
A North-American singer-songwriter best known for her song (What if God was) “One of Us”, a five-time Grammy nominated hit and reason for multi-platinum album sales. Her audience grew significantly with her appearance at Lilith Fair, which placed her in the same school of female singer/songwriters Sarah McLachlan and Tori Amos. Osborne and her band have accompanied the Dixie Chicks, appeared on the Grand Ole Opry, performed on numerous occasions with Phil Lesh and Friends and is known for her soulful work with members of The Grateful Dead.

American Idol Night with Bo Bice. Thursday, July 10th, 5 p.m. - 8 p.m.
It's no surprise the 2005 American Idol (season 4) runner-up achieved success with his gold-certified debut album The Real Thing . This Alabama-born singer has a passionate drive to write and sing which is evident in his newest release, See The Light . The diverse classic American album is full of raw, Southern rock. Bo appreciates what the “Idol” phenomenon has done for his musical career, which includes leading him to rock-greats such as Carlos Santana, who tapped him to sing the track “Brown Skin Girl” on his 2005 album All That I Am.

Disco Night with Sister Sledge. Thursday, July 17th, 5 p.m. - 8 p.m.
By age six she was singing songs with her sisters in perfect harmony. Only 10 years later, Kathy Sledge would record a song that would touch the hearts of millions around the world. After meeting Kathy and her sisters, hit songwriters Nile Rodgers & Bernard Edwards wrote and produced “We Are Family” for them. The song went on to reach No. 1 position on every imaginable chart and also earned a Grammy nomination. At the start of the millennium, Sister Sledge was nominated for a Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction, was voted by VH1 one of the most successful girl groups of all time and in 2001, “We Are Family” was voted the No. 2 biggest record of all time.

Zydeco Night with Terrance Simien. Thursday, July 24th, 5 p.m. - 8 p.m.
Louisiana native and Zydeco ambassador, Simien has been intrigued by the low down, tail shaking party music since he was a teenager. He hit the road with his young band at 17, and since then he has gone on to share the stage/studio with Paul Simon, Stevie Wonder, Robert Palmer, Los Lobos and even toured with Dave Matthews Band. He has conquered film and records with the same intensity he brings to the stage. Rolling Stone gave him an unprecedented 3.5 star review comparing him vocally to Sam Cooke, Stax greats and showing crossover class. He is active in his non-profit artist advocacy & education organization MusicMatters, where he promotes the cultural importance of Louisiana's indigenous music artists.

Groove Night with WAR. Thursday, July 31st, 5 p.m. - 8 p.m.
After thirty years of pushing the harmonic envelope, the band's twenty-fourth album release can be expected sometime in the not too distant future. “Why Can't We Be Friends”, “Low Rider” and many other classics can be found among War's fantastic resume filled with groove, color and passion. War's career skyrocketed in the early 70's as their exhilarating sound spoke to millions of Americans about the troubled times of Vietnam, Watergate and tensions of the inner cities. Fusing rock, Latin rhythms, funk, blues, jazz and soul into a distinctive sound all their own, these multi platinum performers can still deliver to fans more than 30 years after their first appearance in Los Angeles.
Since 1980, this 11 piece local orchestral sensation has been the recipient of numerous awards including the New England Cultural Arts Preservation Award, The Governor's Excellence in Arts Award & Metroland Magazine's “Best Of' Award for seven consecutive years. Irish Night with The Tossers. Thursday, August 14th, 5 p.m. - 8 p.m.
Coming from the predominantly Irish neighborhoods of Chicago, the Tossers have been expanding the boundaries of contemporary Irish music since the early ‘90s. Derived through the melding of traditional Irish and Punk Rock roots, you'll hear a unique mix of mandolin, fiddle, tin whistle and banjo with powerfully fueled guitar, bass and drums. An eclectic past is evident in their stage sharing with the legendary Pogues, the Dropkick Murphy's, Black 47, Clutch, Murphy's Law, and even SKA classics like Pie Tasters and Reel Big Fish.

Whether it is to help a cause, prove one will, or encourage kinship there are all types of fights and bouts going on around the Albany, NY area. This past weekend we were able to attend some fighting events.
We started off at the Taste of Compassion for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society at the Wolferts Roost Country Club. There attendees of the event tasted exquisite wines from renowned vintners, enjoy the sounds of the Ray Alexander Trio, and participate in live and silent auctions all to raise funds to help fight types of Blood Cancers.

On the other side of Albany a bell rings in a new fighting atmosphere in the Capital Region with Cage Wars at the Washington Avenue Armory. Five Guys Fighting brings various forms of fighting to the fans of Upstate NY with Boxing, JiuJitsu, Muay Thai, Karate, and other forms of Mixed Martial Art Fighting.

The Washington Armory then transforms from the ring to the floor and opened their doors with the Albany All Stars Roller Derby League. This week they matched up against the Green Mountain Derby Dames. Win or lose, their fans of friends and families get to cheer on their own local team here in the Albany area.

Hotel California "A Salute to the Eagles" faithfully and accurately reproduces the sound of The Eagles studio recordings while recreating a classic sound.
Each concert showcases The Eagles mega-hits such as "Take it Easy", "Heartache Tonight", and "Hotel California." The group also performs select songs from Don Henley, Glen Frey, and Joe Walsh.

The Original Wailers is a reggae band made up of several members of the former backing band of Bob Marley. In 2008 they embarked on their first World Tour.
Once again we’re back! We hope everyone had a great and safe Fourth of July! The fireworks at the Empire Plaza were great as usual, but this Thursday comes in with a bang that will bring out the brightest and hottest stars!
Alive at Five returns with American Idol Night featuring Bo Bice! Nicknamed “Bogart” as a newborn by his grandmother, Bo Bice performed solo and in rock groups such as Purge, Blue Sued Nickel, and his pre-Idol band SugarMoney. Being the oldest contestant to have progressed the farthest in the American Idol competition, along with Constantine Maroulis, his early performance of The Allman Brothers Band’s “Whipping Post” drew raves from the judges and established him as one of the favorites in the competition. This week is Alive at Five Reggae Night featuring The Original Wailers. Bob Marley and the Wailers have sold more than 25 million albums over the past 40 years, and it has been his band that has helped create this international success. Keyboard player Earl “Way” Lindo first joined the Wailers in 1973, when the debut album “Catch a Fire” was first released. Al Anderson joined the Wailers a year later, playing on hits like “No Woman No Cry”. Bob Marley enrolled singer/guitarist Junior Marvin during sessions for the Exodus and Kaya albums and his solo sounds resonate on tracks like “Waiting in Vain”, “The Heathen” and “Jammin”. Junior, Al & Way toured and recorded with Marley until his death in 1981. Now The Original Wailers, with Junior handling all lead vocals, promise to recreate musical history as they continue to spread the message of “One Love” at Reggae night!

Albany’s 17th Annual Columbus Parade & Italian Festival is one of the largest celebrations of its kind in Upstate New York, recognizing the contributions and the heritage of Italian-Americans, in conjunction with the national holiday celebrating the discovery of America by Christopher Columbus.
The Parade steps of at 1pm on Saturday, October 11, from Ontario Street and Western Ave. It will then continue down Western over Robin Street and into Washington Park. Leading this year’s parade as Honorary Grand Marshal is Albany’s Fire Chief Robert C. Forezzi, Sr. After the parade, an authentic Italian Festival is underway by the Washington Park Lake House with food, music, dancing, crafters, cultural displays and even a gondola in Washington Park Lake. The festival will feature a new Zona Bambini — a Kids Zone — where children will be able to make masks, sing Italian songs, color, learn how to play Italian card games. There will be bocce and soccer demonstrations, pony rides, Roman Riding demonstrations and a fire dance!
The 2008 festival features a special tribute to Bobby Darin, Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin, under the direction of Albany’s Park Playhouse “Sweet Dreams” concert. There will be a special performance of the all-new Henry Hudson and Friends Puppet Show, from the Albany County Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Important Announcement: Alive at Five Southern Rock Night 2009 has a lineup change. The Marshall Tucker Band has canceled and will be replaced by The Outlaws, the 1970’s band, a true Southern Rock sensation. You may remember them from a few years back at the Palace Theatre.
The Outlaws sing: “Ghost Riders in the Sky“, “Hurry Sundown“, “Green Grass and High Tides“, and “There Goes Another Love Song.”

On January 11th, 2010, join Jack’s Oyster House in celebrating their 97th Anniversary in Albany. This event will benefit the Capital Region Salvation Army. Albany Alive will be designing and staffing a very special red-carpet entrance to this event with photos of all those who attend.
This event will feature Jack’s multi-award-winning food and horderves. There will be live entertainment including: TS Ensemble, Al Santoro, a Jazz Trio, and a re-created War Broadcast with music from 1930’s and 1940’s. Mayor Jennings has kindly allowed State Street to be blocked to support the efforts of this event.

This past Monday AlbanyAlive and several Capital Region Leaders attended an event to help honor the 3rd oldest restaurant in the United States, Jack’s Oyster House, celebrate it’s 97th Anniversary and their great renovations while raising funds to assist families in need for The Capital Region Salvation Army. Mayor Jennings made a special guest appearance on the AlbanyAlive.com red carpet for the ribbon cutting.
Certified Master French Chef Luc Pasquier cooked up some outstanding h’dourves and TS Ensemble rocked the newly renovated space. There was even an after party! Several people showed up to the event and showed support via silent auction and red kettle donations.

It’s time for the Capital Region to tune in for the sounds of this talented music artist Jesse Bonanno.Growing up locally, Jesse attended the South Colonie Schools where he became encouraged by his music teachers to continue to follow his dream.
Just releasing his new album, “Check Please”, Jesse returns to his family and friends in the Capital Region.While here, he wants to reintroduce himself to YOU, the local fans, and have you listen to what he has been doing.
Some of his local highlights shows just how determined and talented this musician is.Jesse started playing viola in the orchestra in third grade and continued until his senior year when he composed and conducted an original orchestral piece, “Voyage of a Dreamer”.After being encouraged to develop his voice, he joined a select choir, “Voices of Harmony”. Not surprisingly, he was voted “Most Musical” in his senior year at Colonie High and started a neighborhood band, “Oakwood Drive”.Before entering college, Jesse connected to Lee Waddell of Piano Man Productions where he learned more and was hired to play at weddings and various business/social venues.He also appeared on Fox News Daybreak as the very first musician they ever had on the show and was on the air with B95.5 last year!

This Saturday September 20, 2008, from 10:00am - 5:30pm, Albany’s “village in the city” continues to present the biggest and best street festival in the region Larkfest 2008! This festival features 5 stages showcasing live music and entertainment, an expanded family activity area, and a wide variety of vendors and food from our local restaurants.
Closing off the entire Lark Street, this is one of Albany’s largest and most anticipated events with 70,000 people expected to attend this year! There will be free entertainment and fun activities for the entire family. Visual arts, music, poetry, magic acts, dancing and great food were just a few of the many highlights of last year’s Larkfest in Albany, NY.

Larkfest is this Saturday, September 19, 2009, taking place on Larkstreet - one of Albany’s finest areas of art and culture. Last year an estimated 80,000 people were in attendance to see Tom Morello and enjoy the vendors, making Larkfest New York State’s largest street festival, and one of the nation’s largest as well. This year it is predicted to have even greater attendance as the music headliner Moby takes the stage.
Moby is a world renown ambient electronica artist with hits in both the United Kingdom and The United States. He has been awarded multiple MTV Video Music Awards, Grammy Awards, Billboard Awards, and has been named a Rolling Stone Artist of the year.
The event runs from 10:00 AM to 5:30PM. Get there early as parking will be difficult. Over 80,000 people are expected to attend. Look for Albany Alive, snapping free pictures of you and your friends out for Larkfest.
Straight from the Bronx, Alex Torres will be leading his 11 piece orchestra tonight down at Riverfront Park for Alive at Five Local Latin Night! Torres and his latin orchestra are recipients of numerous awards including the New England Cultural Arts Preservation Award, The Governor’s Excellence in Arts Award, and Metroland’s Best Of Award for seven consecutive years.
Opening for Torres and his latin orchestra is Sensemaya, who fuses hot latin dance rhythms with the cool sophistication of jazz improvision. Come hear the timba style of music from Cuba and funky variations of classic salsa.Free concert free block party on Pearl Street afterwards!
